Sanctions for infringement of traffic rules might be toughened in Moldova

Chisinau, September, 8, 2023 - The sanctions for the infringement of the road traffic rules might be toughened. The MPs from two parliamentary commissions today organized hearings on the subject of ensuring the traffic security in Moldova on the period 2020-2023. Representatives of 12 public institutions participated in the meeting.     

Thus, heads from the Interior Ministry (MAI), including the competent subdivisions, the National Probation Inspectorate, Prosecutor General’s Office National Anticorruption Centre, Public Services Agency, Congress of Local Authorities from Moldova came up with reports. The reports presented contained data on the traffic accidents, their victims and the punishments imposed against the guilty people.   

According to the head of the General Police Inspectorate, Viorel Cernauteanu, during the first eight months of this year, 1,279 traffic accidents occurred, in the wake of which 122 people died and over 1,500 were injured.  

According to statistics, the number of accidents has increased by 1.3 per cent in the last three years. Most often, the traffic accidents are triggered by the excessive speed, failure to give priority to pedestrians and other vehicles, as well as the driving drunk. Since the beginning of this year, 153 accidents with the involvement of police employees have been registered.  

„Through these discussions, we want to understand which the reasons for the accidents are and to identify the legislative amendments needed for improving the situation and preventing the traffic accidents. I mean here not only sanctioning, but also the conditions the local and central public administration, those who manage some road segments must provide, so that we ensure including the safety of pedestrians,’’ the head of the parliament’s commission for national security, defence and public order, Lilian Carp, said.
