Chisinau, September, 7, 2023 - Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has demanded tougher sanctions for the infringement of the road traffic rules. He conveyed a message to this effect at the today’s plenary meeting, given that more traffic accidents, which resulted in victims, have taken place in the last period.

”Let us think about more drastic sanctions. Let them be pedestrians or passengers for lifetime, if they cannot abstain, cannot control themselves and cannot understand how serious driving drunk is. Let them remain without driver’s licence for the entire life. This will be better both for him/her and for people around”, the parliament speaker said.  

At the same time, the official urged the parliament’s commission for national security, defence and public order to organize discussions on the subject with all competent institutions in the field. Igor Grosu asked also the juridical commission for appointments and immunities to revise the legislation, in order to introduce tougher provisions for drivers who cause accidents, being drunk or who do not have driver’s licence. Also, Romania’s experience is to be studied in this sector and in the enforcement of the so-called Anastasia law.  This law stipulates that drivers who are driving drunk, under the influence of drugs or do not have driver’s licences are punished with executory imprisonment, without the court being able to rule the suspension of the punishment.
