Environment must be area where there should be no political or geopolitical differences - Moldovan speaker says

25.11.2022 - Vizita în Republica Moldova a Comisarului european pentru mediu, oceane și pescuit, Virginijus Sinkevičius

November, 26, Chisinau -  "Being part of the free world, of the European Union, means a safe and good life for citizens, but it also means efforts to improve living conditions, modernize the country, strengthen institutions and take care of the environment. Polluted air has no borders, we can ensure a healthy environment only if we work together, country by country". Speaker Igor Grosu made the statement at today's plenary session of the legislature, with the participation of European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Virginijus Sinkevičius.

Igor Grosu said that each state can build its well-being on its own, but the environment is a shared responsibility. "First of all, it's about healthy children. The environment represents our everyday life - the water we drink, the air we breathe, the food we eat", he said.

The speaker pointed out the steps Moldova has started to take to protect the environment: the launch of the National Afforestation Program; harmonization of national legislation with that of the EU; water and sanitation projects; identification of renewable energy sources.

According to the official, the war showed we need to strengthen our resilience in response to crises. "And this is the reason why the European Union adopted the European Green Pact, and the Republic of Moldova signed the Association Agreement with clear obligations in the environment sector", he said.

Grosu said that in the coming years, Moldova can lay the foundations of a stronger state in the face of challenges, safer and more prosperous for its citizens. "I want us to aim to become a model of preserving the environment, we are all part of nature - we have the duty to preserve it and leave it to our children", he said.

He noted that the environment must be an area where there should be no political or geopolitical divergences, something that must be shared by all political parties. "We are equal in front of the planet", he concluded.
