Chișinău, 25 May 2022 – President of the Parliament Igor Grosu has participated today in the event dedicated to the presentation of the draft Electoral Code and of the proposals to amend the related legislation, organised by the Central Electoral Commission.
In his opening remarks, Igor Grosu has referred to four problems identified throughout the years that must be remedied: the diaspora voting; the financing of electoral campaigns; fair media coverage; modernisation of the electoral process.
“The issue of the diaspora votes – we know how many adventures people have gone through over time, concerning the number of the polling stations; interference of the politicians in the establishment of the polling stations; endless queues that gladden us versus the frustrations of citizens waiting for hours on end. There are solutions, namely the digitalisation and modernisation of the electoral process” pointed out the head of the Legislature.
Igor Grosu also tackled the fair financing of the electoral campaign: “All these years, we have had various electoral stakeholders, some of them would respect the rules and other would scorn them. Such contempt was possible because it was tolerated by the system. Here, I plead for zero tolerance to corruption”.
The respect for the freedom of expression and the fair, balanced and impartial media coverage are other subjects that must be clearly defined, including from the standpoint of promoting political pluralism in mass-media, and of fighting misinformation and information manipulation of the society.
The President of the Parliament commended CEC for the efforts it makes to modernise electoral legislation and expressed his conviction that this work will contribute to transparentizing elections in the Republic of Moldova, so that the voters trust the power and value of their votes and political stakeholders contend in equal conditions.
